Today our boys from Rang a Cúig & a Sé made history by becoming the first ever hurling team from Corballa National School to win the Sligo hurling championship.
Hurling is a relatively new sport for the parish of Castleconnor and our school. The GAA club has been doing sterling work for the last 5 or 6 years in promoting hurling and training children in the many skills of our national sport. This year our outgoing Parents’ Association committee spent almost €1,000 to provide our school with 20 helmets and hurleys so that all children can learn hurling in school. Hurling coach Benny Kenny has worked with girls and boys for a 6 week block to demonstrate technique and encourage them further.
In 2017, we entered the boys in the 9 -a – side hurling competition for the first time and were greatly heartened to reach the county final, losing only to an excellent Gaelscoil side.
Today, in beautiful May sunshine, the boys travelled to Scarden to face Geevagh in the semi final. The standard of hurling was high and it was not until late in the 2nd half that Corballa pulled ahead to set up another final. This time we would play Rathcormack of North Sligo in the decider.
Corballa found themselves under serious pressure in the first half and had the brave goalkeeping of D Meenaghan to thank for keeping them in touch. Tenacious defending from D Holmes, N Rafter and D Bourke denied Rathcormack several certain scores and so the teams were level at half time.
The second half saw M Sheridan take command in the mid-field alongside captain E Durkan who gave a display of silken skills. Forwards C Dolly, D Stenson and F Gordon hunted relentlessly for scores which began to pay dividends. Substitutes O Mullarkey and T Sheridan injected further energy in the second half.
Ultimately this was to be Corballa’s day and the boys’ determination and effort paid off with a memorable victory. E Durkan accepted the perpetual shield and offered three cheers for our worthy opponents Rathcormack who will surely have another day.
So well done to the boys of 2018 – hurling champions of Sligo! Another great day of sport for our school and “for the credit of the little village”.
